The 11th Annual IIT Real-Time Communications Conference 2015, this year expanded its emphasis on the art, science and technology that support the rapidly evolving field of Real-Time Communications.

This year, we kicked off an expanded agenda with Alan Quayle running TADHack-mini Chicago at Idea Shop at University Technology Park the weekend of October 3-4. The Hackathon focused on IoT (Internet of Things), NextGen Emergency Services, Telecom APIs and WebRTC, identity / federation, and speech / video processing. The TADHack sponsors awarded seven $1K prizes, plus a Trossen Robotics HROS1 Humanoid Endoskeleton to each of the winners, who were then invited to give their demo pitches in a conference keynote the following Tuesday.

On Monday October 5, we added two half-day Tutorials covering two of the most important and timely topics in real-time communications today, taught by leading subject-matter experts. The morning tutorial on WebRTC, taught by Alan Johnston and Dan Burnett, was a hands-on course that helped developers get started in analyzing, coding, and troubleshooting WebRTC applications. In the afternoon, Daniel Wagner-Hall taught the Federated Identity Tutorial, which investigated the challenges involved in breaking down the walled gardens resulting from an increasingly fragmented real-time communications landscape, and practical approaches to overcoming them.

By the time the main Conference got underway on Tuesday, we’d already had three busy days! This year, we expanded the track on the burgeoning ‘Internet of Things’ space, while continuing to explore ‘Mobile Networks and Applications’, ‘WebRTC and EmergingCloud Communications’ and the special challenges of delivering NextGen Emergency Communications services over IP networks. IPTComm, the academic conference whose juried papers are published in the ACM’s Digital Library, was once again a featured track.

Presentations examined the status of the real-time communications industry, explained emerging technologies and introduced new ideas and methods. Leveraging our unique academic setting, the Conference brought together a diverse range of telecom, IT, web and academic professionals from around the globe.

We are happy to be able to share videos of this year’s keynote talks as well as the presentation slides provided by many of our speakers.

The Videos of the Keynote Talks and Panels are available via the below links, and also on the conference website homepage.

The Presentation slides provided by many of our speakers are available on the Conference Program page. To view them, click on the down-arrow to the left of each presentation title. This will display a drop-down box that includes speaker name and presentation abstract. The slides are available at the bottom of the drop-down area.

Looking Ahead

We are already planning the 2016 Conference. The tentative date is Oct. 17 – 20. Please let us know if this date conflicts with any events that might make it difficult for you or other members of the RTC community to participate. Contact Carol Davids, (davids@iit.edu) , Warren Bent, (warrenbent@inchargesys.com) , or Tom Costello, (t.costello@iit.edu) to share this and other information about the dates or content of next year’s event.

We also plan to host a Center for Global TADHack the weekend prior to the conference on Oct. 15 -16. More details on these events will be forthcoming soon.

The IIT RTC Conference is a globally recognized collaborative event, where industry and academia connect. Leveraging its unique academic setting, this annual conference brings together technical professionals and business executives from the data and telecommunications industry, standards bodies, policy and regulatory institutions, and academic educators and researchers to promote an open exchange of ideas to lead future development in the rapidly changing field of real-time communications.
